Policy Analyst, Atik Mohammed has chided the leadership of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) over their intended nationwide demonstration against the Electoral Commission over the discrepancies that was uncovered during the last Voter exhibition exercise conducted by the Electoral Commission.
On Peace FM's 'kokrokoo' morning show on Tuesday, September 10, 2024, Atik Mohammed maintained that, the NDC could resort to a more appropriate approach rather than embarking on a nationwide demonstration to express their displeasure over the alleged discrepancies in the voter exhibition exercise.
"I have heard that the NDC wants to embark on a nationwide demonstration to register their displeasure over the discrepancies they have seen with the voters register. I don’t know to what end they want to do this. If there are issues you’ve found with the register, I believe that there are clearer procedures."
"They may not be exactly constitutional but there are conventional ways to address this issue. IPAC is a great platform which has worked for us over the years. You can actually demand that the Electoral Commission calls for an IPAC meeting, then you can lay bare your findings while attaching evidence to it."
According to Atik Mohammed, the intentions of the NDC to demonstrate against the EC is not setting a good precedence for the party at large as the EC has not announced the existence of any register as far as the December 7 general election is concerned.
"What impression are you looking at creating with the register? Are we creating the impression that the Electoral Commission is running with a terrible register?
"Little do they even know that the EC has not officially announced the existence of any register because, the EC has not announced anything of that sort. So what exactly is the demonstration about?" he asked.
Atik's comment comes on the back of an announcement made by the National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress(NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketia on Monday, September 9, 20224, moments after filing the nominations forms of the party's flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama.
Addressing the media after presenting the nominations documents to the Electoral Commission, Asiedu Nketiah said, “those of you who have been asking us what we would do if they did not comply, this is your answer: on the 17th of this month, the NDC is embarking on a massive nationwide demonstration in all 16 regional capitals.”
