EC Officials Interdicted Over Missing BVDs

Dr. Serebour Quaicoe, the Director of Electoral Services at the Electoral Commission (EC) has disclosed that some officials of the Commission have been arrested over the alleged theft of some five (5) laptops which are part of its Biometric Voter Registration (BVR) kits.

The suspects have been handed over to the police for further investigation, according to him.

Earlier this month, the NDC disclosed that seven of the Biometric Verification Devices (BVD) were missing. But the EC clarified that only five laptops used in BVR were missing, and these did not contain voter data.

The electoral body insisted that these missing laptops will have no consequence on the outcome of the December 7 elections and further debunked claims that it would struggle to organise a free and fair election following the theft of its five laptops.

Speaking to the media on Monday, Dr. Quaicoe said: "What I can say on authority is that we lost one BVD in North Tongu, and what happened was that we normally package these things in ballot boxes. You put your systems and you seal. In the course of transporting, we got there, but they couldn’t transport the ballot boxes. So we reported it to the police. We have lost this, and these are the suspects, so investigate and let them go through the legal regime."

“Whatever has to be done should be done. They have been interdicted they are now going through the investigations. So, the police I am told that they will be arraigned before court soon,” he added.
