Nana Akomea, Vice Chairman of the ruling New Patriotic Party’s campaign team, says the party has no option but to remain in power if the Electoral Commission does not declare another party as the winner of the upcoming December 2024 presidential and parliamentary elections.
Speaking on the 'Kokrokoo' Morning Show on Tuesday, April 2, the CEO of the Inter City State Transport Coorperation, Nana Akomea, mentioned that the desire to remain in power ceases when another party is declared the winner.
Nana Akomea commented on Bryan Acheampong’s comments on the NPP not giving power to the NDC in the upcoming December elections.
The Abetifi lawmaker had mentioned that the ruling party will not hand over power to the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).
Addressing some party supporters in the Eastern region, Bryan said, "Last year I stood here in Mpraeso and said that whether the NDC likes it or not, they will never win the 2024 polls. If you don’t win an elections, will power be handed over to you? We will not hand it over to them today or tomorrow’’.
However, Nana Akomea has cautioned all NPP supporters and communicators over what he describes as statements that come up in "silly seasons" when elections are forthcoming.
"We have to be careful with our utterances. I heard Bryan said something. But I don’t think Bryan meant to say that NPP will not hand over power to NDC if the Electoral Commission declares them winners. We don’t have that option. In fact, that option does not exist. If we go to the polls and the electoral commission declares the opposition party as winners, the ruling government does not have the option of saying that you will not vacate your post. It is not possible. With what authority will you be sitting?" Nana Akomea quizzed.
"Let us be mindful of the things we say in the upcoming elections. I am confident the NPP will win because the candidate we are presenting is a very solid candidate. Let us not do anything that will mar the victory that awaits us in the December 2024 polls," he added.
He added that, if former President Mahama was the choice, Ghanaians would not have sacked him from power.
According to Nana Akomea, John Dramani Mahama was rejected by Ghanaians when he sought a second term in 2020, adding that all previous presidents have had two successful terms, with the exception of the former president, Mahama, who was overwhelmingly rejected by Ghanaians.
"There is nothing new Mahama can bring to the table. The choice before Ghanaians is one, and that is Bawumia."
"NPP is winning the elections, so we don't have to do anything to destroy our chances. It is the NDC who knows they will lose so they can go ahead to misbehave," he said.
