Blame Lands Commission for Persistent Land Disputes - Bernard Mornah Fires

Political activist, Bernard Mornah, believes blame should be laid at the doorstep of the Lands Commission for the unbridled land litigations between landowners and land guards in the country.

To him, if the Lands Commission was up to task by providing detailed and accurate information to the potential buyers about availability of lands, issues pertaining to who is the rightful owner of the land would be a thing of the past.

Speaking on UTV’s Adekye Nsoroma show on Monday May 6, Mr. Mornah held the view that if this is ensured, sale of land to multiple buyers would cease.

"...before anyone buys a piece of land, there should be thorough investigation about the availability of the land."

"I don’t see why people should sincerely fight over a land. But the other thing is that, the Lands Commission is largely responsible for these things. This is because anyone who wishes to buy a piece of land, especially a soldier undertakes a thorough search. How come the Lands Commission is not able to provide a chunk of the information to the prospective buyer?’’ he quizzed.

He was commenting on the tragedy that happened at Kasoa Millennium City following the murder of Lance Corporal (L/Cpl) Danso Michael by one Benlord Ababio, who is said to be a divisional chief and a land guard over.

This incident was said to have been as a result of a land dispute between the military officer and the land guard on the 30th of April around the hours of 4:20 pm.

The suspect is in custody of the police whiles investigations are underway.

Mr. Mornah further stated that, the laws governing the sale of land are not functioning leading to the impunity showcased by some persons believed to be landlords or land guards.

" . . anytime a land is sold, there is a portion that goes to the stool lands, family and the state. How is that the stool land secretariat were not able to ensure that the stool lands are well taken care of? If a stool land is registered and there is a potential buyer, the stool land administrator can reveal the availability of the land. The absence of such data will let one landlord sell a particular land to multiple buyers," he added.
